Guapinol environmental defenders Aly Domínguez and Jairo Bonilla were murdered by armed assailants in northern Honduras on January 14, 2023. Domínguez and Bonilla were co-founders of Guapinol’s grassroots resistance against an iron ore open-pit mine EMCO-Los Pinares. Domínguez was among 32 community leaders falsely accused of crimes by the mining company and local authorities. Relatives and lawyers allege that the murders are linked to the defenders' activism, and to the ongoing threats and harassment faced by the Guapinol community.
