Bangladesh: Labour leader arrested during minimum wage protests released on bail

"HC grants bail to labour leader Babul Hossain", 11 January 2024

The High Court on Wednesday granted bail for six months to Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati’s central general secretary Babul Hossain who had been in jail for 58 days in a case relating to setting a vehicle on fire during labour unrest in Gazipur, on the outskirts of the capital...

Lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua, who appeared in the HC seeking Babul’s bail, told New Age that there was no legal bar to his release from the jail as he was not wanted in any other case.

He said that Babul was arrested on charges of inciting violence and vandalising vehicles during protests calling for a hike in minimum wage.

Labour rights leaders and activists have been demanding unconditional release of Babul, who is also a human rights activist.

He had been active in organising recent protests advocating a hike in minimum wage for workers in Bangladesh.

Babul went missing on the evening of November 14, 2023 while travelling from Ashulia to Gazipur to meet with families of those who had suffered violence due to police attack during the ready-made garment workers’ protests.
