On 14 February 2024, union leader Chea Chan, newly elected president of a recently formed independent union at Wing Star Shoes Co Ltd., was detained at work by the police and charged with "conspiracy to commit theft" over the crime that allegedly happened years ago following a complaint brought by the company. On January 10, 2024, workers at the Wing Star factory established an independent union to address poor working conditions and treatment, including, among other abusive practices, restrictions on workers' basic access to the toilets. International and local unions view Chan's detention as a crackdown on unions and an attempt to stop the formation of unions in factories. Chan was sentenced to one-year imprisonment. He will serve six months in jail, and another six months will be suspended.
