Court-Ordered Inspections Conclude In Ecuador Chevron Case

The judicial inspections in a lawsuit in Ecuador against Chevron...have concluded, presiding Judge Juan Nunez [said]...Plaintiffs representing indigenous people...alleged that Texaco failed to clean up toxic wastewater in the area and that the company used out-of-date technology that led to environmental damage. A verdict in the case, which was moved to the Nueva Loja court in 2003 after a decade in U.S. courts, is expected later this year..."It is unjust that Chevron is being asked to pay for the Petroecuador's neglect and damage to the environment," said Chevron spokesman James Craig...But plaintiffs said that Chevron is distorting the facts...Last November, Richard Cabrera, a court-appointed expert, told the...Court that Chevron should pay more than $27 billion for environmental damages...
