Myanmar: Fashion brands disclose human rights due diligence approach and practice in Myanmar

Through collaboration with partners and allies inside and outside Myanmar, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre has been tracking allegations of abuse against garment workers at factories in Myanmar since the military illegally seized power in February 2021. In April 2023, we invited 46 brands which reportedly source from or have sourced from factories where alleged abuses recorded in the Tracker took place to respond to a survey on their business strategies in Myanmar, including how they approach and practice human rights due diligence and responsible exit in Myanmar. The survey is part of the Resource Centre’s new report "Falling out of fashion: Garment worker abuse under military rule in Myanmar" which outlines the increasing human rights abuses in Myanmar and how international fashion brands and retailers are approaching the situation.

Twenty-one brands responded to our survey (Adidas, Aucham, Bestseller, C&A, Fast Retailing, H&M, Hunkemöller, Inditex, Kappahl, KIABI, Lidl, M&S, Matalan, Next, Otto, OVS spa, Primark, Sioen, Tendam, Tesco, and Topvalu). Twenty-five others did not respond (LPP S.A., Mango, New Yorker, GUESS, Pep&CO, Moschino, Creaciones Selene, Justin Brands, Regatta, JAKO, Koltov, Carhartt, SKIMS, La Senza, Juicy Couture, American Holic, Dunnes, Piazza Italia, Gratex Industries, Jennyfer, Terranova, Cordura, Fristads, Calliope, and Shimamura).
