Singapore: Chinese national killed on construction worksite; employer & occupier failed to respond
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre wrote to Samkang Construction and China Jingye Engineering (via its parent, MCC) over reports of the death of a worker on a worksite in Mandai in March 2024. The Ministry of Manpower said the incident occurred when a Chinese construction worker was off-loading a mini excavator when his truck moved forward and pinned him against a stationary concrete mixer truck. The Ministry stated investigations are ongoing and “As a general safety measure, all parked heavy vehicles must have their parking brakes engaged and wheel chocks properly positioned".
Samkang was reportedly the worker's employer and China Jiangye was reported to be the worksite occupier. We invited both companies to respond, including by outlining how each ensures safety standards for workers are upheld on their worksites, including by contractors and subcontractors. Neither company responded.
Developer Mandai Wildlife Group said “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. All parties involved are offering them the necessary support during this difficult time.”
