Argentina: NGO raises concerns with CNOOC and Chinese mining industry association over lithium mine's negative impact on environment and indigenous communities; incl. Co. non-response

Diálogo Chino

In May 2024, FARN sent letters to the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters (CCCMC) addressing serious human rights and environmental violations in Jujuy, Argentina, particularly concerning lithium mining in the Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc regions. The letters emphasized that mining activities are being conducted without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of local indigenous communities, who oppose the operations. They also highlighted the lack of transparency in environmental authorizations and the absence of updated environmental assessments, raising concerns about the fragile ecosystem and water usage in the arid area. Furthermore, the letters noted that pending legal issues regarding mining permits could jeopardize future investments, urging CNOOC to reconsider its involvement and calling on the CCCMC to enforce compliance with human rights and environmental standards for Chinese firms abroad. To date, the letters have received no response.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited CNOOC to respond to FARN’s request. It did not.
