Australia: Directors of now-liquated company fined AUS$104k for deliberate under-payment of migrants
The owners of a now delisted and liquated company, Loelal, were fined AUS$104k for deliberately under-paying 97 migrant workers at their hotel and cafe business in Victoria, Australia. The Federal Circuit and Family Court heard the couple required two Nepali cooks to work unreasonable additional hours. Underpaid workers included people from countries including Nepal, Pakistan and Armenia, as well as 15 people subjected to child labour.
The company was put into liquidation in 2022 and the couple still operates the hotel and cafe through another corporate entity. The case was brought in 2023 and resolved with the imposition of penalties against the owners in December 2024.
