Sri Lanka: Adani Green plans to invest over USD 1 billion for wind power projects amid environmental concerns

Adani Group plans to invest over USD 1 billion in Sri Lanka to develop two wind power projects, marking the country's largest foreign direct investment and the biggest power initiative. Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) will establish wind farms in Mannar and Pooneryn with a combined capacity of 484 megawatts, funded by approximately USD 740 million. Concerns from lobby groups highlight environmental impacts, procedural irregularities, and tariff issues.

The project underwent an extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by an independent expert before approval. Adani asserts compliance with all relevant laws. Criticism surrounds the unsolicited nature of the project award to Adani Green Energy PTE Ltd without competitive bidding.

A petition raises doubts about the EIA's credibility, the role of SLSEA, procedural fairness in awarding the contract, and questions about the project's classification as a Government-to-Government deal. Transparency issues prompted the petitioners to seek legal intervention to protect public interests, including environmental conservation, public finances, and the rights of Sri Lanka's citizens and future generations.
