On December 3, 2017, eight Lumad human rights defenders, namely Datu Victor Danyan, Artemio Danyan, Bobot Lagase, Mateng Bantel, Pato Celardo, Samuel Angkoy, To Diamante, and Victor Danyan Jr., were massacred allegedly by soldiers in Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato Province, the Philippines. The eight belonged to T’boli-Manobo S’daf Claimants Organisation (TAMASCO), a group of Lumad fighting for their ancestral lands. The eight Lumad were killed after organising a peaceful protest against the expansion of a coffee plantation on their ancestral lands, that had been grabbed by DM Consunji Incorporated (DMCI)-owned Silvicultural Industries, Inc.’s (SII) Dawang Coffee Plantation. The community had previously complained about harassment from soldiers and plantation guards. The community was also said to be pressured by another company, San Miguel Energy Corp, to stop opposing its coal mining application for Daguma Agro Minerals.
