Indonesia: Over 150 Chinese migrant workers in Obi Island jointly claim wage arrears by a contractor company; Company promises settlement after developer intervenes

On September 13, 2022, more than 150 Chinese workers working on Obi Island were at the door of the developer's office building, hoping to ask for an explanation about wage arrears by a contractor. Most of the workers did not receive their wages for four months from May to August. Workers get more concerned over the unpaid salaries as they heard that the original contractor had lost money and would be replaced. Also, these workers may not have work visas.

After the workers publicly sought help, a person in the developer company contacted [...] to clarify the relevant situation, saying that the main responsibility for the incident lies with the contractor. However, the developer expressed their willingness to actively coordinate and solve the wage arrears of the workers.

On September 17, the contractor company said they had reached an agreement with the workers on wage issues, and [on September 16] the workers resumed work. A portion of the arrears of wages will be settled before the end of the month (the worker corrected that one month's wages will be settled first), and the rest will be gradually settled in the following months.
