Malawi: Arbitrary arrest and detention of journalist may lead to the repealing of archaic laws that restrict media freedom

The arrest and arbitrary detention of Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) Managing Director Gregory Gondwe sparked outrage from civil society across the country. As a result of the unlawful arrest, Malawi’s attorney general issued a public apology and vowed that the country will repeal or review some archaic laws that restrict media freedom, freedom of expression and violate right to privacy.
