Mitre Sports sue HBO over a report linking it to child labour in India, US jury cleared HBO of libel claims

Mitre Sports sued HBO for defamation in 2008, after a report called ‘Children of Industry’ aired in news programme ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel’. The trial began on 13 April in US District Court in Manhattan, and Mitre’s lawyers sought “tens of millions of dollars” for damages they claimed the company suffered after the report portrayed it as using or turning a blind eye to child labour making Mitre football balls in India. US jury cleared HBO of libel claims on 8 May 2015. The case is Mitre Sports International Limited v. Home Box Office Inc in US District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-09117.
