Myanmar: Tigyit coal power plant & mine allegedly caused miscarriages & cancers, loss of farmlands, & depletion of underground water

Recent media reports allege several violations concerning the Tigyit coal-fired power plant and coal mine in southern Shan state in Myanmar, such as: (1) the construction of the plant is a joint venture of the China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC) and a group of businessmen affiliated with Myanmar’s ruling generals who were responsible for the attempted 1 February coup d’état; (2) the operation of the power plant and coal mine has resulted to pollution that has caused “miscarriages, cancers and other serious disease”, loss of farmlands, depletion of underground water sources, and land collapse.

Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited CHMC to respond to the allegations. The company did not respond.
