Niger : Civil society organisations concerned about water quality because of uranium exploitation; incl. company response
In northern Niger, civil society in Arlit is concerned about the quality of the water consumed by the population, in a region where uranium has been exploited for several decades. For this reason, an environmental NGO sent recently a letter to several ministries to alert the new authorities and request radiological analyses in this mining region where uranium has been mined for many years.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre asked Orano (formerly Areva), which operated the uranium mine that ceased its activities in March 2021, to respond to the concerns of the civil society. Orano's response can be read in full below (translated by the Resource Centre).
