Rejoinder from MiningWatch to Equinox Gold response

..we feel that the questions raised in our press release remain unanswered. Would you be able to provide the following information?

  • ...In a report prepared under the National Policy for Dam Safety, with assistance from the Mining Dams Divisions and Safety Services, Lagoa do Pirocaua appears listed as a mining dam (barragen de mineração). If this is not a dam why does the Ministry call it a dam?
  • Clarification of why Equinox Gold didn’t register Lagoa de Pirocaua before March 25th, when it was operating; the National Mining Agency (ANM) lists it as registered on March 31st, 2021, as “desativada” (closed).
  • Clarification of why the Secretaria de Estado de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Naturais (SEMA) of Maranhão is reporting two failures. On April 8th, SEMA published an article that says there was a failure in another structure above Lagoa do Pirocaua that caused the failure at Lagoa do Pirocaua. In an article published on April 9, the government of Maranhão echoes this information.
  • Proof that the small freshwater lagoon is not an old garimpo lagoon, historically used for artisanal mining...
