Sierra Leone's parliament passed the Mines and Mineral Development Act of 2022 that will require companies operating to obtain the Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of local communities before starting mining and those who own land will now have the right to veto any project affecting it. It also grants women equal land rights The new laws are considered some of most protective towards communities globally.
