As outlined in our Global Human Rights Statement, Starbucks has a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal practices in our supply chain and require full compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct among our suppliers. 

When we became aware of the claim made against Tokatsu Foods, Inc. in November 2020, we immediately launched an investigation in partnership with a third-party outside counsel. The third-party investigation determined that no legal violations occurred during the period from 2015-2016.

In addition, as part of Starbucks regular course of business, we remain actively engaged and committed to working with our suppliers to ensure compliance with Starbucks ethical sourcing standards across our supply chain. A scheduled third-party audit of current practices that was delayed due to the current state of emergency across Japan will begin as soon as the state of emergency has been lifted and it is safe for auditors to evaluate conditions onsite. These evaluations include on-site audits, anonymous interviews with employees of each supplier, sharing of best practices, and support for continuous improvement.

Starbucks ethical sourcing standards and compliance protocols are essential to our goal of using our scale for good and creating positive impact in the communities we serve. We will continue to work proactively with our suppliers at every level to help them achieve full compliance with our ethical sourcing requirements and with consideration of local laws and regulations.
