Switzerland: Voters narrowly back Indonesia trade deal with sustainability clause yet concerns over palm oil remain
On 7 March 2021, Swiss voters in a public referendum narrowly backed (51.6%) a new free trade agreement with Indonesia. The deal aims to facilitate trade and includes planned tariff reductions for certain agricultural products, in particular palm oil. Opponents of the deal had raised concerns around the environmental impact of palm oil, which is linked to rainforest destruction. The agreement however does include a sustainability clause, meaning imported palm oil will have to meet certain environmental standards, which NGOs said was a step in the right direction.
