Uganda: Human rights concerns over Kingfisher oil field operations
The Kingfisher Development Area (KFDA) project in Uganda is a major oil development project operated by China National Offshore Oil Company, Uganda (CNOOC Uganda) on behalf of joint venture partners including TotalEnergies Exploration and Production, Uganda (56.67%), Uganda National Oil Company (15%) and CNOOC Uganda (28.33%). The project aims to produce and process crude oil from the Kingfisher field, located on the shores of Lake Albert in Kikuube District.
As the project has progressed, allegations have emerged of military involvement in forced evictions and abuse of local communities in the project area. These allegations have prompted responses from the companies involved, drawing attention to the potential human rights impacts associated with oil development projects in the region.
