USA: Ten years after Deepwater Horizon oil spill, advocates highlight long-term health, environmental & economic impacts
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill began after an explosion on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico. It is considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry and one of the largest environmental disasters in US history.
Ten years later, scientists, environmental advocates, and some policymakers warn that the same risks remain as before the disaster. The House Committee on Natural Resources released a report to coincide with the 10th anniversary which asserts that the Trump Administration's focus on "energy dominance" has meant less focus on worker safety and environmental protection and higher profits for the oil and gas industry.
