Zimbabwe: Miners accuse Chinese companies of low pay, poor working conditions and environmental damages; incl. co. response
Chinese mining companies in Zimbabwe face mounting allegations of labor rights violations and poor working conditions according to a Voice of America (VOA) report from November 2024:
- At Hwange Coal Mine, workers report intrusive security measures and retaliation against labor organizers under Zhong Jian Investment. The company's HR representative maintains they follow all regulations.
- At Detroop Gold Mine, operated by Jiangxi Risheng Mining Company, workers allege substandard wages and uninhabitable worker housing conditions. The mine manager acknowledged these issues but attributed them to production challenges, stating improvements had been promised but were delayed by low production.
- At Bikita Minerals (acquired by Sinomine in 2022), workers allege that mining operations threaten resident safety occurring just 20 meters from homes, medical support has declined under Chinese management, and workers face job insecurity through repeated short-term contracts. At the time of VOA's reporting, Bikita Minerals did not respond to requests for comment.
In December 2024, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Bikita Minerals to respond to the allegations. The company provided a detailed response stating that it maintains strict safety protocols and environmental certifications, provides subsidized healthcare, and employs workers with competitive wages above national rates.
