Myanmar: Access Now urges Telenor to stop sale of local enterprise to M1 Group citing human rights concerns; incl. co. comments
Months after a military coup in Myanmar, the July 2021 announcement by Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor that it was selling off its Myanmar operations to M1 Group was met with alarm by civil society groups and human rights activists, who filed a complaint with the OECD Norwegian National Contact Point and raised concerns with the company directly that the move risks harming human rights.
Without the company changing course, in October 2021 digital rights group Access Now wrote a letter to the board of directors of Telenor urging them to stop the sale on human rights grounds, and presented a portfolio of concerns surrounding M1 Group's human rights record.
We invited to Telenor and M1 Group to respond to the letter's concerns, and received responses from both companies.
