On 26 September 2023, territory defender Norma Lino and eight other members of the Garifuna community of Puerto Castilla were victims of an attack by armed men in the department of Colón, Honduras. The nine community members were injured and hospitalised. This attack came less than a week after Miriam Miranda, director of the Black Fraternal Organisation of Honduras (Ofraneh), was threatened by heavily armed men surrounding her house.

These attacks occurred within the context of Garifuna communities attempting to recover land that they have been historically displaced from. Ofraneh states that the Empresa Nacional Portuaria (ENP), the company that won titles to Puerto Castilla in the 70s, sold land recently to Japanese company Satoshi Sasaki. The organisation affirms that these private interests provoke the attacks against Garifuna communities.
