S. Korea: Hanwha Ocean faces lawsuit from Metal Workers' Union over repeated accidents and alleged violations of Serious Accidents Punishment Act

“Union takes legal action against Hanwha Ocean after 4 worker deaths at Geoje Plant”, 12 November 2024

In a series of tragic incidents this year, four workers have lost their lives at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje plant, prompting the Metal Workers' Union to take legal action against the company and its CEO, Kwon Hyuk-woong. The union has accused Hanwha Ocean of violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, highlighting a pattern of negligence and inadequate safety measures.

… Despite the multiple fatalities, the company has not implemented proper safety measures and appears more focused on evading responsibility.

In response to the growing criticism, Hanwha Ocean announced a 2 trillion won safety investment plan over the next three years…

…The union also criticized the discriminatory safety measures against subcontracted workers, who are often more vulnerable to workplace hazards. This year alone, four workers have died in accidents at Hanwha Ocean, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive safety reforms.
