...In March 2012, Wilson Pástor, Minister of Non-Renewable Natural Resources during the government of Rafael Correa, signed the first large-scale mining contract, which allowed the open-pit exploitation of copper and other minerals, for a renewable 25-year period.

Mishell Mantuano and Viviana Erazo visited the parish of Tundayme, in the canton of El Pangui, province of Zamora Chinchipe, in Ecuador's southern Amazon, where the project is located, to see first-hand the consequences of mining exploitation, the impact on the environment, the forced migration and the dispossession of people from their homes, and to learn about the consequences of the mining project, forced migration and identity dispossession experienced and still experienced by the Shuar indigenous communities, who have been violently and forcibly evicted more than once from their territory and who were deceived when, ten years ago, they were promised schools and hospitals that never arrived…
