Axis Communications response

We are aware about a few reported cases where Axis products have been found in Russian military drones. Our records show that these products were sold to a Russian distributor back in 2018 and has since then been discontinued from our product portfolio. The product is a so-called video encoder that converts analog video signals to digital. It is a relatively simple product that is not subject to any export restrictions and that can be purchased via various resellers around the world. In the reported cases, from the pictures we have seen, the encoder has been modified to be used in drones – something it is neither designed nor intended for.

We halted all our exports to Russia in February 2022, and we have since then suspended all remaining operations in the country (more information about timeline and steps can be found here), and that includes termination of all distributor contracts in Russia. This also means that we have no business relations with the distributor that purchased the reported products in 2018. We also use IP geo-blocking to prevent downloading or updating software for existing Axis products in Russia. For Axis distributors outside Russia, our contracts stipulate requirements to comply with applicable law and not export in violation of trade restrictions, embargoes or sanctions. We do what we can to try to prevent our products from falling into the wrong hands or being used in ways we never intended. More information about our export compliance can be found on Axis.com.
