Brazil: Possible tailings dam burst in the country's largest gold reserve leaves population without access to water in Maranhão

According to the Movement of Dam Affected People (MAB), one of the dams in the community of Aurizona, in Godofredo Viana, Maranhão, broke on March 25. The tailings would have contaminated Tromaí river.

The operation, under the responsibility of the mining company Aurizona, belongs to the Canadian private group Equinox Gold. It is the largest gold mineral reserve in Brazil and one of the main in the world.
