Snapshot: An ex-worker filed a lawsuit against Codelco with the Court of First Instance of Diego de Almagro, Chile, claiming that the company had failed to implement adequate safety measures to prevent pulmonary silicosis, a disease he was diagnosed with after performing various mining tasks for 28 years. The Court ruled in favour of the worker, awarding him compensation. Codelco appealed the decision. The Court of Appeals of Copiapó upheld the ruling. Despite further attempts to overturn the decision, the Chilean Supreme Court, in 2013, confirmed the ruling and mandated that Codelco pay over $103 million in compensation to the former worker. The case is closed.
