Fatal accidents at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje plant spark safety concerns

A series of tragic accidents at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje plant have led to multiple worker fatalities this year, prompting accusations from the union of serious safety failings. The union claims the company has violated the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, citing a pattern of negligence and insufficient safety measures.

Despite these incidents, Hanwha Ocean has yet to implement adequate reforms to improve worker safety, with the union alleging that the company is focused more on avoiding accountability than addressing the underlying issues.

Further criticism has been directed at the company's treatment of subcontracted workers, who are reportedly more vulnerable to workplace hazards. The union is calling for urgent safety reforms to prevent future tragedies.

In an interview with Labor Today, Hanwha Ocean stated, "We have embarked on a company-wide initiative to fundamentally improve our safety culture and establish a strong, advanced safety framework." The company added, "We are committed to addressing the root causes of potential safety risks on the worksite, with the goal of practising 'safety-first management' and achieving a 'zero-accident workplace'."
