FC Bayern & Qatar Airways: Sponsorship deal to end following sustained fan criticism of over rights record; cos. had not responded to club members' human rights concerns
A motion brought by FC Bayern ahead of the club's annual general meeting on 25th November 2021, alleges that "FC Bayern is actively helping the Emirate of Qatar with its sponsorship to draw attention away from these evils", owing to its ongoing partnership with Qatar Airways. The statement also reads that the sponsorship deal "is incompatible with the values of our association"; it can be read in full below.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited both FC Bayern and Qatar Airways to respond to the motion; neither provided a response, though FC Bayern clarified that it stands by a previous statement provided to the Resource Centre.
At the FC Bayern AGM on 25th November 77.8% members reportedly voted for the club to identify itself with “internationally-acknowledged human rights.” The podium, which includes #FCBayern President Herbert Hainer and CEO Oliver Kahn, all voted against the motion.
In January 2022, Club Nr. 12, an association of active FC Bayern fans shared a short statement on the AGM with the Resource Centre; this can be read in full below.
In June 2023, FC Bayern did not renew the sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways.
