Myanmar: Garment workers denied compensation after factory closure

“Thousands of GTIG-EASTAR garment factory workers suffer due to non-payment of temporary closure”, 9 February 2022

The factory owners, who were forced to close their factory seven months after the fire in March 2021, are refusing to pay compensation to their workers…

"We went to negotiate...When we asked for compensation, they denied that the factory was closed because of the fire," said a worker at the factory.

Almost seven months after the fire broke out at the factory, the workers were recalled…leaving most of the workers unable to return due to political unrest.

"When the returnees were ordered to work on other lines and the people from the outlying areas were given only three days to [return]…[there was] only about 500 people left in the factory," said a factory worker…

"There have been other labor rights abuses," said a GTIG-EASTAR employee…

The factory is a Chinese-owned factory that sells TESCO brand leather jackets, including OVS, KIABI, C&A, TESCO, ZARA, House, It is also a company that makes and exports brands such as F&F Brand.
