Myanmar: Garment workers face wage loss following changes to payment system; incl. co. responses

In December 2023, it was reported that workers at Myanmar Guotai Huasheng Glory Fashion were facing a series of violations, including workers facing difficulties withdrawing their wages due to a change to a bank card payment system since November 2023. Workers forced to return home in order to register to the card system had to leave their jobs due to difficulties such as road and security conditions. Workers who had to leave to re-register were not given leave and their wage were reduced. It is also reported that workers were forced to meet high hourly targets, with workers unable to drink water or go to the toilet, and managers and security searching through workers’ belongings.
