New clashes in New Caledonia

There have been more clashes between French riot police and Rheebu Nuu Kanak activists, with 18 demonstrators reported arrested Tuesday morning. Radio New Zealand International said the local political party Kanak USTKE union has joined the campaign against the two-billion U.S. dollar nickel project at Goro [owned by Inco, Société de participation minière du Sud calédonien (SPMSC), Sumitomo Metal Mining (part of Sumitomo Group), Mitsui], saying it has to be made environmentally safe.
