Newmont Response on the killing of José Ascensión Carrillo Vázquez

...On June 28, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Newmont to comment on the disappearance and killing of the transport leader and social activist José Ascensión Carrillo Vázquez. We welcome the opportunity to provide a response to allegations in the media and are committed to being transparent about claims made against us. In this regard, we have a ‘Stakeholder Claims, Events and Newmont Responses’ page on our website. Further information on this event can be found in the document entitled, ‘Mexico Human Rights Update: June 16, 2021’. Newmont received information about the tragic loss of life that occurred in the community of Vanegas-San Luis de Potosi Mexico on Sunday, June 6, 2021, located approximately 150 km from the Company’s Peñasquito mine. This tragic incident was unrelated to our Peñasquito operations. Among those killed, was José Ascensión Carrillo Vázquez, a former member of the CAVA trucking consortium who was actively involved in blocking mine operations during 2019 in an attempt to extract transportation-related contracts from the mine using local community members and environmental impact related concerns. Following the termination of contractual relationships with CAVA in March 2019, Peñasquito participated in a dialogue and mediation process which resulted in a collaborative agreement being ratified by the Cedros community in 2021. As noted in, ‘Respecting Human Rights: Our Approach’, Newmont does not condone any form of attack against anyone, including those that classify as human rights defenders or anyone who opposes our activities. We call on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of this tragic incident and bring those responsible to justice...
