RWE's response
RWE is committed to upholding and respecting human rights in all business activities and areas of influence. Freedom of expression is a fundamental value of democracy and therefore essential to any just society. We strongly condemn any attempt to restrict freedom of expression, including repressions against activists.
We highly appreciate the dialogue with our stakeholders. This includes explicitly the exchange with critical stakeholders, as it helps us to to better understand diverging perspectives and to identify commonalities. Respectful interaction is a basic requirement for a constructive dialogue at all times.
We clearly emphasize that RWE is not intimidating activists neither in general nor in the specific case of Ende Gelände, an organisation which is under scrutiny by public authorities because of anti-constitutional tendencies. We decisively reject this accusation. On the contrary, we invite them to continue to express their opinion – independently of our own views.
However, we can neither accept that our employees are physically attacked nor that our property is damaged. We consider it appropriate to report any incidents of violations of existing laws to public authorities and to use legal support helping to prevent future incidents. Even more, we have offered to not pursue any legal action if persons who committed criminal offenses against our property guarantee that any repetition will not take place.
