Vedanta Zinc International and ELB Group have confirmed that an accident at the Gamsberg zinc project near Aggeneys in the Northern Cape claimed the life of an ELB employee on Friday, 25 May.

The press statement issued did not reveal how the fatality occurred, noting that the next-of-kin of the deceased have been informed, and his details are being withheld to protect the privacy of his family.

Fortunately, no other employees were injured in the incident.

All work at the Gamsberg project has been halted while investigations – involving the local emergency services and South African Police Services, the Department of Mineral Resources, our representative trade unions and senior Vedanta management and operations structures – are underway...

“All of us at ELB and Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) are devastated by the news, and commit to assisting the family of the deceased, now and in the weeks and months to come. Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues,” said the press statement.
