Thailand: report highlights the use of SLAPPs & judicial harassment in Thailand’s Poultry Supply Chain

In March 2023, the Global Labor Justice - International Labor Rights Forum (GLJ-ILRF), and International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR) published a briefing about the use of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) and other judicial harassment tactics by poultry companies in Thailand.

The report provides new evidence about the continued use of SLAPP suits by Thai poultry company Thammakaset and its supply chain to harass migrant workers, lawyers, journalists, and other human rights defenders.

The report calls on companies and all corporate actors in the poultry processing supply chain to drop any SLAPP suits and provide remedies to workers and labor rights defenders for the years of judicial harassment they faced for exercising their rights to freedom of expression. The report also includes recommendations to Thailand’s government and the countries importing poultry from Thailand.

In October 2023, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited companies named in the report as being involved with SLAPPs or having business relationships with a company facing allegations of using the Thai judicial system to harass human rights defenders. Thammakaset, Betagro, and Thaifoods Group did not respond. We were unable to contact Srabua Company Limited.
