Tokyu Construction's response

Thank you for giving us an opportunity to respond to the request from the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre regarding Justice For Myanmar’s report on the railway projects in Myanmar financed by the Japanese government.

Tokyu Construction has established the Tokyu Construction Group Human Rights Policy[i] and pursues initiatives designed to respect human rights, in accordance with the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

The Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project is an ODA project funded by the Japanese Government. We have been working with the Japanese Government and JICA to implement this project since 2018, and recognize that this project will make a positive contribution to the lives of the people of Myanmar.

In 2013, we established a subsidiary in Myanmar through a joint venture with Shwe Taung Development, a local Myanmar company. Our subsidiary’s primary business involved construction projects for Japanese manufacturers entering Myanmar. However, this subsidiary basically suspended its operations in February 2021.

Our top priority is the safety of our employees and all other persons affiliated with our business operations in Myanmar. We will continue to monitor the situation in Myanmar closely.
