Urgent Communiqué on the Massacre in Nacahuil, Guatemala

We are informing…of the massacre that occurred…against the Kaqchikel community of San Jose Nacahuil, in the municipality of San Pedro Ayampuc…a community of Indigenous Kaqchikel people…[and] the only Mayan village … characterized for defense of its territory against...outside threats…[including] Treccsa, the electricity distribution company…and the ongoing actions in La Puya, where there is a peaceful movement resisting a mining company…On September 7…a police patrol arrived in the community ...Ten minutes later, gunmen arrived…and started a shootout on the main streets of the community…Ten people were killed and 17 people wounded, among them two girls 11 years of age who are now safe, and others who have died in hospitals in the capital...[Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Kappes, Cassiday & Associates to respond.
