Japan: Real estate company lists ‘LGBT not allowed’ among rent conditions; incl. co. statement

"賃貸物件に「LGBT不可」表示 不動産会社「人的過誤」修正対応へ," 2 October 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

Several cases have been confirmed in which a real estate company have stated "LGBT not allowed" in the recruitment conditions for rental properties.

The wording can be interpreted as certain people will not be accepted on the basis of their gender identity or sexual orientation. LGBT people and others have expressed disappointment and confusion.

In response to an interview by the Asahi Shimbun, the company commented, "It was inappropriate and misleading. It was the result of human error and we had no intention of discriminating against LGBT people." The company is currently working on improving its internal systems.
