"Tk 25,000 sought as minimum wage for garment workers", 15 March 2023

Leaders of 12 rights bodies for garment workers...called on the government to form a new wage board within 30 days and raise the minimum wage to Tk 25,000 for apparel workers.

They made the call at a joint press conference in Dhaka.

Garments Sramik Odhikar Andolan, a combine of 11 garment labour rights bodies, and Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre jointly organised the press conference in front of the National Wage Board office in the city where Garment Sramik Samhati president Taslima Akhter readout a written speech..

Taslima said that previously in 2018, the wage board award was declared and a minimum monthly wage of Tk8,000 was fixed.

‘But the garment workers are suffering much to run their families with the wages they get,’ observed the female leader.

She demanded Tk25,000 as a minimum monthly wage.

A series of demonstrations were announced in the garment factory belts across the country, including holding a protest rally in Mirpur on March 20, in Ashulia on March 21, in Narayanganj and Chattogramon March 31, in Savar on April 7, in Mymensingh on April 14 and in Dhakaon April 16...
