On 28 May 2019, the mining company Vale withdrew from the UN Global Compact (largest network for corporate social responsibility in the world) after pressure from civil society from across the world. In February 2019, an international group of organisations formally requested the United Nations to delist the company due to the bursting of the tailings dam in Brumadinho (MG) that happened on 25 January and left approximately 245 people dead and dozens missing and homeless. The organizations claim that Vale has violated the Global Compact’s principles on human, labour and environmental rights, by not carrying out adequate risk assessment, not taking the necessary measures for prevention and mitigation and by failing to adopt measures of non-repetition after the 2015 collapse of the Mariana dam.
