Japan: Human Rights Now calls for the implementation of import bans on goods linked to forced labour

"[Report] "Addressing forced labor in Japan's supply chains: The case of Shimano Corporation and the need to ban the import of products produced using forced labor" 16 October 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

Human Rights Now, an international human rights NGO based in Tokyo, has investigated and analysed the human rights violations and suspected forced labour in Shimano's supply chain, and published a report based on this case to make recommendations regarding the establishment of import ban on products produced using forced labour in Japan...

This report examines the exploitation of migrant workers in global supply chains at three levels: (1) the companies directly linked to the violations, (2) the country in which violations occur, and (3) the country to which the products of the violations are sent...

The report calls for urgent reforms in corporate accountability and government enforcement to protect migrant workers. It advocates for the implementation of import bans on goods linked to forced labour, alongside stronger labour law enforcement and ethical recruitment standards, to combat exploitation in global supply chains.
