Mondelēz International responded
Response issued to the Business & Human Rights Resource Center on April 27, 2020
At Mondelēz International, we are committed to making our snacks the right way, protecting the planet and respecting the human rights of people in our value chain, including our palm oil supply chain, in line with our Palm Oil Action Plan and using the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, as a framework for preventing and addressing associated risks. Furthermore, we believe in the resolution of disputes through non-violent and peaceful means that promote the dignity of people and respect the rights of all.
Mondelēz International does not source directly from PT Bukit Barisan Indah Prima (BBIP) or its PT Arta Prigel subsidiary, however the company is a supplier to suppliers of ours. We are deeply concerned by the reports of violence in Pagar Batu village, and the resulting deaths of two members of the local community. The case is currently being investigated by the regional police, and we are awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
We became aware of this case in late April. Since then, we have launched our internal palm oil grievance mechanism process to confirm our relationship to PT Arta Prigel, and engaged with relevant suppliers to understand their actions to-date. We will follow closely the outcome of the police investigation and continue to monitor the situation through our ongoing supplier engagement.
For more information on our commitment to source palm oil sustainably, please see our Palm Oil Action Plan.
