S. Korea: Investigation uncovers forced labour in Sinui Island salt farms that supply to major food companies

[Unofficial summary Korean-to-English summary translation provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"Sinui Island, Sinan County, South Jeolla Province is the largest solar salt production site in South Korea, producing around 70,000t a year."

[...] "JTBC reporters exclusively reported about allegations of modern slavery in salt farms tied to the county lawmaker. 'Tamsa Plus Team' captured in film police's search and seizure process, as well as an interview with the lawmaker in question (identified as Park) repudiating the allegations. The Team also reported that the operators of salt farms in Sinui Island have been supplying to solar salt production factories owned by large food companies in South Korea."

[...] "Tamsa Plus reporters also met with the salt farm workers rescued by the extensive police investigation. They were staying in a long-term care facility in Muan County, South Jeolla Province as they did not have anywhere else to go. A significant number of the workers were considering returning to the 'hell-like' salt farms because they could not find other jobs."
