Tunisia: Sotacib cement co. allegedly jeopardizes worker's health and safety in Kasserine, resulting in the death of one worker and multiple injuries to 12 others during factory explosion; co. did not respond

On May 5, 2022, an explosion occurred in the Sotacib Kasserine factory due to an accidental crane overturn. The worker who was driving it died in the hospital after suffering serious injuries. As a result, the public prosecutor's office authorized the opening of an investigation into the injuries sustained by 12 other Sotacib workers during the explosion.

In a statement by local media outlet Shems FM, Kasserine trial court spokesman Riadh Nouaoui said, "investigations are ongoing determine whether this incident was premeditated or the result of a breach."

Whereas the general secretary of the Sotacib workers' syndicate emphasized in a statement on "the necessity of the company's respect for occupational health and safety and maintenance of worn-out machinery and equipment in the factory to avoid work accidents while taking into account workers who suffer from low wages and work in conditions where occupational health and safety conditions are almost non-existent."

Among the victims of the explosion, there were 6 handling workers who requested post the accident to legalize their professional status and guarantee the socio-economic rights of the injured who do not have access social and health coverage.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Sotacib to respond to allegations of poor health and safety conditions in workplace, which resulted in the death of one worker and serious injuries to 12 others during an explosion in the factory. Sotacib did not respond to our request.
