"Which company is the most lethal post-serious accident punishment law? Hyundai E&C”, 24 September 2024

Since the implementation of the Serious Accident Punishment Act on 27 January 2022, Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) has emerged as the company with the highest number of fatal accidents, reporting eight worker deaths up to 30 March this year.

….The Ministry of Employment and Labour has kept the list of workplaces where serious accidents have occurred since the law’s enactment confidential.

…In response to the findings, a representative from Hyundai Construction claimed that there have been no fatal accidents since March this year. The spokesperson stated in a telephone interview, "Hyundai E&C is currently operating at over 140 construction sites, the most among domestic firms, and we prioritise health and safety, implementing various enhanced safety management measures."

… The serious accidents occurring at high-risk workplaces have primarily affected subcontracted workers. Among (...) the top 5 companies, 29 out of 36 fatalities, or 80%, were subcontracted workers.
