DRC: Reports reveal negative environmental and health impacts of industrial and artisanal cobalt mining; incl. co. response

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), both industrial and artisanal cobalt mining have been reportedly linked to environmental pollution and serious reproductive health problems among women, particularly in the Kolwezi region, known as the 'cobalt capital of the world'. Preliminary research indicates an alarming increase in birth defects, stillbirths and infant mortality, which has been attributed to environmental pollution from mining activities. Contamination of water sources with mining waste and the presence of harmful substances such as uranium raise concerns about the health impact on local women. Health workers report a worrying influx of women with reproductive health problems, including miscarriages and serious infections, exacerbated by poor sanitation and hygiene.

To address these health and environmental challenges, various stakeholders are mobilising initiatives to improve conditions for affected communities. The Mining Cooperative for Social Development (CMDS) is making progress by providing personal protective equipment to more than 6,000 artisanal miners, particularly women. These efforts are supported by the Fair Cobalt Alliance, which promotes responsible mining practices.
