Human rights group files complaint with Ireland’s OECD National Contact Point against Afilias related to alleged human rights harms to Chagossian people

The Crypto Currency Resolution Trust and Chagos Refugees Group UK filed a complaint with the Ireland OECD National Contact Point detailing alleged consumer and human rights harms by Afilias Ltd, the manager of popular cryptocurrency and tech domain .IO. The complaint says that by managing the domain to generate profits for its shareholders, it abets the crime of apartheid against the African Chagossian people and supports the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) regime which is unlawful colonialism. The complaint also says that Afilias has marketed and administered the domain in such a manner that it has become an offshore haven for organized criminals using crypto assets in violation of the OECD consumer guidelines.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Afilias to respond; it did not.
